2014 Review
2014 started with an improved outlook of Japan’s economy with high expectations of a turnaround
from decades of deflation. The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo combined with the “Abenomics” revitalisation
package kept the outlook optimistic. Japan’s sales tax was raised from 5% to 8% in April 2014. The
April hike was cited as the primary cause for an unexpected contraction of GDP figures for two
consecutive quarters up to September 2014. According to EIU, overall GDP grew by 0.1% in 2014.
